The Roland D.VIb had a top speed of 199kph (124mph) and was armed with two 7.92mm LMG 08/15 machine guns.
Roland entered two D.VIs in Idflieg's January 1918 fighter competition. The first was powered by a 160hp Mercedes D.III engine (D.VIa) and the second (D.Vib) by a 160hp Benz Bz.IIIa engine. Roland lost the competition on price to the Fokker D.VII. However, Idflieg also placed orders for both versions in case of Fokker suffering production problems.
