The Panther is generally considered one of the best tanks of World War II. It combined good mobility and armour with an excellent main gun, the 7.5cm KwK 42 (L/70).
The Panther started life in 1938 as the replacement for the Panzer III and IV tanks. Following contact with the Soviet T-34 and KV series of tanks during Operation Barbarossa, the original design was scrapped. The new design, the Panther ausf D, commenced production in January 1943, followed by the Ausf A in August 1943, and this model, the ausf G, in March 1944.
