The Sopwith Triplane had a top speed of 188 km/h (117 mph), and was armed with a single synchronised 0.303 inch Vickers machine gun.
Sopwith's experimental department developed the Triplane as a private venture. Two months after the Triplane's maiden flight, the aircraft was sent to 'A' Naval Squadron in France for evaluation, where it proved to be very successful. A total of 147 aircraft were built, mostly for the Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS).
