The Nieuport 11 was a small French single-seat fighter. It had a top speed of 162kmh and was armed with either a single Lewis or Hotchkiss machine gun mounted on the upper wing. It could also be armed with eight Le Prieur rockets for use against observation balloons and airships.
The Nieuport 11 was a sesquiplane, a biplane with a full-sized upper wing and a lower wing with a much shallower chord. V-shaped struts joined the upper and lower wings. The design provided significant benefits, including lower drag, a higher rate of climb and an improved pilot view. It was significantly more robust than contemporary monoplanes. It equipped the French Aéronautique Militaire, the Royal Naval Air Service, the Imperial Russian Air Service, the Belgian Air Force and the Italian Cprpo Aeronautico Militare.
