This model includes both the short 7.5cm K51 L/24 gun (Sd Kfz 234/2) and the long barrelled 7.5cm L/46 PaK 40 (Sd Kfz 234/4). The 234/2 provided fire support against soft targets while operating with the Sd Kfz 234/1. The 234/4 was another way to provide mobility to the PaK 40 antitank gun. Both models were open-topped.
Review of the performance of the wheeled reconnaissance vehicles early in WW2 identified some gaps in the available types. This resulted in the design of the Sd Kfz 234 in late 1940. Trials started in mid-1942, with production of the 234/2, with a turret-mounted 5cm L/60 gun, from late 1943 until mid 1944. The 234/1 followed the 234/2 from mid 1944 until early 1945. Production of the 234/3 was concurrent with the 234/1, operationally supporting the 234/1. Production of the 234/4 ran from late 1944 until the end of the war as another way to mobilise the 7.5cm PaK 40 antitank gun.
