Sopwith Camel
$13.00
The Sopwith Camel was the successor to the Sopwith Pup. It had a top speed of 182 kph (113 mph) and was the first British-designed fighter armed with twin synchronised 0.303 inch Vickers machine guns. Up to four Coopber bombs could also be carried in the aircraft’s ground attack role.
The official name for this aircraft was the Sopwith F.1. Pilots called the aircraft the Camel due to the metal fairing over the machine guns. The name stuck. The Camel could be difficult to fly for a novice pilot. This was due to a combination of light controls, 90% of the aircraft's weight being ion the front 2.1 m (7 feet) and the gyroscopic effect of the rotary engine. These were all used to their advantage by experienced pilots.
