Light weight Ferdinand Porsche-designed light passenger vehicle. Field-tested during the invasion of Poland in 1939, with production of the improved model (Type 82) commencing in early 1940, and continuing until the end of the war.
Porsche's Kubelwagen resulted from the problems of the 1930s German plan to simplify off-road passenger vehicle supply to three designs - light, medium and heavy. Delivery of the first examples of these passenger types came with significant issues - high costs, manufacturing problems and the inability of the manufacturers to meet supply. Porsche was approached for a light vehicle design in early 1938, presenting his Type 62 to the military for testing in late 1938. Field testing and development continued through 1939, ending with the Invasion of Poland in late 1939.
