The Nieuport 17 was a French sesquiplane fighter with a top speed of 170kmh. In French service it was armed with a syncronised Vickers machine gun, and/or a wing Lewis gun on an upper wing mounting. In British service the plane was armed with a Lewis machine gun mounted on the upper wing.
The Nieuport 17 was a slightly larger sesquiplane fighter than the Nieuport 11, and was armed with a fuselage-mounted synchronised Vickers machine gun. The plane had a significant advantage over then current fighrters on both sides due to it's high reate of climb and outstanding manouverability. It served with all Allied powers, and unlicenced copies with the Deutsche Luftstreitkräfte (German Airforce) as the Siemens-Schuckert D.I.
