The Panzer IV G was initially named the Panzer IV F2, and renamed after three months of production. It was the first model armed with the new, long-barrelled 7.5cm KwK 40 L/43, plus a coaxial and a hull mounted MG34. During its production there were a number of changes, including front armour increased to 80mm. In April 1943 the tank was upgunned to the longer 7.5cm KwK 40 L/48.

German armoured doctrine at the start of WW2 used the Panzer III as the main battle tank with the Panzer IV, armed with the 7.5cm KwK 37 L/24 gun, providing infantry support forces. Contact with the T-34 and KV series of tanks during Operation Barbarossa identified the need to upgun German tanks. Being the larger tank, the Panzer IV had more development potential than the Panzer III. As a result, the Panzer IV was the only German tank to fight throughout WW2.
