The Panzer III ausf. E was armed with a 3.7cm KwK 36 L/46.5 gun and three machineguns. Two of the MGs were coaxial with the main gun in the turret; the third was hull-mounted.
The Panzer III was the first of the German medium tanks. Heinz Guderian originally saw the Panzer III, armed with a 5cm gun, as an ideal design for both antitank and infantry support roles. The German Ordnance department (the Waffenamt) had other ideas, and short-sightedly opted to arm the Panzer III with the 3.7cm Pak 36. The Panzer III ausf. E was the first of the production Panzer IIIs. Earlier pre-production series (ausf A; ausf B; ausf C and ausf. D) were used to combat test four different track and suspension setups.
