The Toldi tank series were based on a Czech prototype from the Škoda workshops (T-22). The Turan I was based on this prototype, and armed with a 40mm Hungarian antitank gun, and increased armour. 1941 combat experience showed the Turan I (then in development and construction) would not meet requirements for a modern medium tank. Design of an upgraded tank with heavier armour and a 75mm gun commenced immediately, and the first of the Turan IIs entered Hungarian service in late 1943. At this time it was already obsolete.
